We are often told to pick one path, specialize early, and go deep. But David Epstein’s Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World challenges that advice. Kind environments and wicked environments

This is one reason generalists can contribute to innovation. They may notice relationships that are invisible to people working inside a single discipline. Range is more than collecting interests

Being a generalist does not mean dabbling without purpose or avoiding difficult work. Epstein’s argument is not a defense of shallow knowledge. Instead, range involves building several useful capabilities and learning how they interact.

A professional might combine technical knowledge with communication, behavioral insight, design, or business judgment. Each individual skill may not be unique, but the combination can be. The result is a person who can translate between groups. They may help a technical team understand customer behavior, explain complex data to senior leaders, or connect a design decision to a broader business strategy. Their advantage comes from seeing the larger system rather than optimizing only one small part of it.

What artificial intelligence makes more valuable

The rise of artificial intelligence adds urgency to the discussion. AI systems are increasingly capable of performing narrow tasks, including generating code, analyzing information, and producing drafts. As more specialized capabilities become available on demand, human value may shift toward judgment, synthesis, context, and orchestration.

This does not make deep expertise obsolete. Specialists remain essential for understanding difficult technical problems and evaluating the quality of proposed solutions. But the ability to define the right problem, connect multiple perspectives, and coordinate tools and people becomes increasingly important.
